Most people say the eyes are what they notice first when meeting a new person. Unfortunately, our eyes can also be telling that person we are much older than our actual age. That’s because the skin on and around the eyes is some of the thinnest on the entire human body, and it is constantly exposed to the elements. The natural slackening of our skin and support tissues with age doesn’t help.
Eyelid surgery with Dr. Phillip Dahan can give you back younger-looking eyes. This is a subtle procedure that delivers very satisfying results.
Clinically called blepharoplasty, eyelid surgery aims to reduce the sagging and puffiness that affects the eyelids and some of the surrounding skin. The surgery removes or repositions fat deposits in the upper eyelids to eliminate puffiness, and it trims excess, sagging skin. On the lower lid, excess skin is removed and the underlying muscles tightened to address bags and wrinkles. Eyelid surgery takes up to a decade off a person’s facial age.
Eyelid surgery is the one cosmetic procedure equally popular with men and women. This is because sagging, aging eyelids don’t show a preference to one sex or the other. More and more men are having this procedure in order to keep up with younger counterparts at the office. The reality is that most people over the age of 40 could benefit from this surgery with board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Phillip Dahan. These are some typical characteristics of patients opting to have blepharoplasty:
At Advanced Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, Dr. Phillip Dahan pays particular attention to fat in both eyelids, and his extensive experience is important. Some doctors remove too much fat, leaving the patient with a hollow look in the area. Dr. Dahan usually leaves most of the fat, opting to simply reposition it to maintain a natural look. He finds that tightening the muscles involved with eyelid function is often the best way to reduce bags without removing fat
Eyelid surgery improves the contours of the upper and/or lower eyelids. Crow’s feet form from repetitive muscle contractions and skin aging outside the eyelids. These muscles are not addressed with blepharoplasty.
Yes, Dr. Dahan repositions fat in this area to fill in the hollowness that develops beneath the lower eyelid. This dramatically improves this area.
Many people combine facelifts with eyelid surgery for more overall facial rejuvenation. Brow lifts address the brows and the forehead, and they also make a good complementary procedure.
“I love Dr. Dahan and his staff. I had his RefreshLift, eyelid surgery, and breast lift, and could not be happier! I was back at work in 11 days, back at the gym in 14 days. I was surprised by how painless the procedures were, and how quick and easy the recovery has been. I would recommend Dr. Dahan to anyone who wants the best!”*
Sometimes, insurances may pay for the removal of excess upper eyelid skin in cases where vision is affected. The insurances require that you have a history of visual field limitation, visual field testing by an ophthalmologist and photographs from our office clearly demonstrating the condition. The insurances, however, will not pay for the removal or repositioning of eyelid fat which is considered cosmetic.
Dr. Dahan is able to effectively hide the incisions in this surgery. In the upper eyelid, the incision is made in the natural crease of the eyelid, so the incision becomes virtually invisible. In the lower eyelid, it is either made just below the eyelash or inside the eyelid. Neither options leave a visible scar.
Another great thing about this procedure with Dr. Dahan is that it doesn’t require an involved recovery period. Recovery from eyelid surgery is not difficult and doesn’t require extended time. After your surgery, we supply you with a cold compress and lubricating eye drops. If you are diligent with the compress, your swelling and bruising can be mitigated. In most cases, your stitches are removed in about one week and your eyes, while there may be some slight residual swelling, will usually look great already.
Eyelid surgery is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures around the world, and it has proven to be safe. There are the potential risks and complications of any surgery: infection, bleeding, and poor wound healing. Complications that are specific to eyelid surgery are potential development of dry eye, entropion or ectropion, and problems closing an eyelid, but these are very rare. Blepharoplasty with an experienced surgeon such as Dr. Dahan has very low risks and delivers satisfying results.
